Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
