Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
