Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
