Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
